Auditory Processing Deficit (ADP)

Only an audiologist can diagnose APD. There are various profiles which need to be identified by testing, as treatment choices depend on the particular type of APD. The audiologist’s testing should be followed up by a functional language assessment that includes receptive and expressive language, reading skills and possibly writing.


In the case of clients who are preschool age or who have not had an audiology evaluation to test for APD yet, we can determine if a client is highly suspect for APD. We can perform the functional evaluation first, then refer to an Audiologist to confirm or rule out APD once they are old enough. Prior to this, treatment may include strengthening phonological awareness. Together with the Audiology evaluation, we can provide the treatment program that would be best for each individual.


In addition to traditional top-down therapy, bottom-up brain-based therapies are highly effective. They include Fast ForWord® and Interactive Metronome®. With the recommended frequency and intensity, brain changes can be made to help with building new neuronal pathways in the brain, improving function for improved learning and communication. We are certified in both programs and can make the proper recommendations based on each particular individual’s needs.
